12/24/14

12/24/14 - SD Business Journal: San Diego City College recently marked the opening of a new two-building, $94.6 million complex housing the college’s arts, humanities and business programs in the downtown area.

Located off Park Boulevard near Balboa Park, the project includes the 128,000-square-foot, five-story Arts & Humanities building, with a 40-car underground parking structure; and the 62,000-square-foot, three-story Business & Technology building. Officials said the buildings share an open outdoor plaza.

The Arts & Humanities building includes a 100-seat theater with drama classrooms and related offices, with outdoor spaces including a kiln yard, sculpture garden, display area and gathering spot for students and faculty.

The Business & Technology facility includes new space for the college’s business studies program and the Small Business Entrepreneurship program. There are also seven computer labs, classrooms, a lecture hall and areas for start-up businesses for students in the Business Education program.

Construction was managed by PCL Construction, and the project was designed by Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects. Officials said the buildings are on track to obtain Gold certification in the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.

The project was funded through the $1.55 billion construction bond program approved by voters as Propositions S and N. The community college’s Prop S&N program manager is locally based construction services provider Gafcon Inc.
