Gafcon Tabs Local Man to Head Imperial Valley Projects

08/21/23

El Centro Resident Fernando Ramos is New Project Operations Director

IMPERIAL — Gafcon Inc. has appointed Fernando Ramos as its project operations director to oversee its growing number of Imperial Valley developments. Ramos has served as project manager and engineer on multiple municipal projects in the Valley and high-profile renewable energy projects throughout the nation and internationally during his 30-plus-year career, according to a Gafcon press release.

“Fernando has the enthusiasm for making a difference for the communities in the Imperial Valley that exemplifies Gafcon’s vision of developing dynamic projects locally,” said Paul Najar, Gafcon senior vice president and Imperial Valley business line leader. “He’s well known in the Valley, and his engineering expertise is widely respected. We are thrilled to have him join our team.”

Ramos is a longtime El Centro resident. However, he frequently traveled widely to oversee projects being built elsewhere. Joining the Gafcon team, he said, feels like coming home.

“I don’t just know the community here, I love it,” Ramos said. “I love doing work that helps people, improves their lives. I look forward to furthering Gafcon’s commitment to building community-first projects that enhance the quality of life for the people in the Imperial Valley.”

Victor Nava, Gafcon’s director of strategy, development, and partnerships, said adding Ramos to the team enhances Gafcon’s capacity to manage the projects it takes on in the Valley.

“With the addition of Fernando, we can enhance our ability to oversee our existing and ever-growing local portfolio of projects that exemplify the company’s vision and capacity to execute complex projects to enhance the communities we serve,” Nava said.

Ramos works in Gafcon’s Imperial office. He is overseeing Gafcon’s transformation of the half-built and long abandoned four-story hotel in Imperial into an upscale Cambria property.

He also will manage the Gafcon’s construction of the Valley’s first PACE center (Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) for Innercare on property adjacent to the hotel.

Managing complex construction is nothing new for Ramos. He has worked on local, national, and international renewable energy projects.

Ramos was responsible for constructing the operations and maintenance facility for the Ocotillo Wind Project and has worked on numerous other renewable energy projects locally and elsewhere.

He was the project manager for designing and constructing Earthrise Nutritionals’ production ponds and warehouse near Calipatria. Earthrise produces blue-green algae as a world food resource.

Some of the projects Ramos recalls most fondly include the development of the Calipatria water plant and municipal projects he oversaw in Heber, Holtville, El Centro, and Westmorland.

“Gafcon’s offer that lets me be in the Valley and work on projects to help people, to improve lives here, was something I couldn’t resist,” said Ramos.
