“We are excited to be opening our beautiful new La Jolla expansion, designed by Annabelle Selldorf. This iconic design rising above the Pacific will for the first time allow the public to see the full depth and breadth of MCASD’S collection. We are grateful to the Gafcon team for their management of this complex project. Their attention to detail and communication with the team made all the difference.”

“Overseeing the intricacies of this project, including international partners and suppliers under the conditions of COVID, was a huge challenge to our budget and schedule. The Gafcon team was with us every step to successful completion. We appreciated their integrity and teamwork throughout.”

Gafcon, Inc. provided construction management services for the 75th anniversary expansion of the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art’s La Jolla location. The La Jolla campus has more than 4,700 objects in its permanent collection and frequently features special installations. As the collection has grown, the limited space has proven inadequate. Due to real estate acquisitions and a bevy of generous donors, the museum is officially able to expand its facility.
The project, which is the fifth renovation of the museum, includes the new construction and modernization of various parts of the existing ocean-front museum. The scope includes construction of two gallery levels with distinct architectural features, relocating the museum entry, a public parking lot with seaside terraces, a loading dock, an art preparator’s room, a freight elevator, art storage, and two levels of below-grade parking.
