For more than eight years, residents and educators were looking to enhance the R. Roger Rowe campus that was originally built in 1919, styled after the Spanish colonial architecture of the area. The Rancho Santa Fe School District schools sit on a small 7.5-acres, with a 40-foot varied elevation from entry to field. With the passage of a $37M bond, leveraging an additional $3M remaining from a previous bond measure, the campus went from dream to reality.
Gafcon, Inc. was selected to provide program management services for the modernization, as well as construction management, estimating, constructability review, and scheduling services for Roger Rowe Elementary and Middle School. Several modular classrooms were removed to make space for the modernization of five aging buildings, as well as construction of new two- and three-story buildings providing 55 new classrooms and labs, a new technology center, new District and school offices, a staff lounge, conference rooms, and upgraded utilities. The multipurpose room is the most prominent structure on the campus. The original budget for this was $3.5M, but a community campaign was able to raise an additional $1M in funding to provide performing arts functionality with seating for 400.
Gafcon, Inc. used a phased approach to solve the challenge of constructing on a restricted site while students occupied the campus. Gafcon, Inc. worked closely with the District, architect, and contractors to make sure construction was completed within a two-year time frame.
