The Accelerated School
The Accelerated Schools (TAS) selected Gafcon, Inc. as its project manager/owner’s representative to negotiate with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to expand an existing charter school campus, adding 100,000 SF to build a state-of-the-art kindergarten-12th grade multiplex of schools. The campus is located in South Central Los Angeles and includes: a pre-kindergarten, grades K-8, the Wallis Annenberg High School, a professional development center, early childhood development center, performing arts center, health and wellness center, gymnasium, and public-accessible library. The $30M project broke ground in 2002 and was funded by California Prop 1A, LAUSD Prop BB, private donations, and a $10M grant from the Annenberg Foundation—the largest grant of its kind in LAUSD’s history.
Gafcon, Inc. was instrumental in establishing TAS as the first successful public/private partnership to implement a “turn-key” project delivery system within the LAUSD system. Gafcon, Inc. provided preconstruction, design coordination and development, consultant interface, contract administration, construction management, tenant improvements, and move-in coordination services. With students attending classes in the existing part of the campus, Gafcon, Inc. worked closely with contractors to ensure construction was completed with minimal disruption to students and faculty.
